VeganLens Privacy Policy

Last updated: August 20, 2026

This is the privacy policy for VeganLens (package com.ralvarezmar.vegancheck), developed and operated by Rubén Álvarez Martín. VeganLens helps users look up product information and assess whether products are suitable for a vegan diet. Rubén Álvarez Martín does not operate a backend server for the app.

Summary

VeganLens does not collect personal data for the developer and currently includes no analytics, crash reporting, advertising, or third-party trackers. No account, login, or stored credentials are required.

Data stored on the device

The app stores the following data exclusively on your device:

This data is not sent to the developer. You can clear history and the product cache from the app. Uninstalling VeganLens removes the app's local data from the device.

Camera, barcodes, and OCR

VeganLens requests camera access to scan barcodes and, optionally, capture an image of an ingredients list for text recognition.

Barcode scanning and OCR run locally on the device using bundled Google ML Kit models. Camera images and frames are processed in memory: they are not uploaded to a server and are not persistently stored. The image used for OCR is not sent as part of a contribution.

On-device ingredient translation

Optional ingredient-list translation runs entirely on the device using Google ML Kit translation models. The first use may require downloading a language model from Google, but the ingredient text itself is never uploaded or sent to Google for translation. After the model is downloaded, translation can work offline. VeganLens includes no analytics, tracking, or advertising.

Third-party databases

To look up public product information, VeganLens may connect to:

Product lookups and searches send the information needed to locate products, such as a barcode or search terms. Product images may be loaded from those databases' image servers or CDNs, according to URLs included in their responses.

Open Food Facts and the other databases are independent third-party services with their own terms and privacy policies. See the Open Food Facts terms of use and privacy policy. The terms of each sibling database may differ.

Contributions

When a user chooses to complete product data, they can select one of the four databases and submit a contribution. The contribution contains the barcode and only product fields the user filled in, such as product name, brand, quantity, categories, ingredients, and labels. It does not include the user's personal data. It is authenticated with a shared app account configured by CI; the user does not log in or provide credentials. The app also sends a random app identifier (app_uuid) that is not linked to a personal account and is not used for tracking.

The contribution becomes part of the selected public database and may be publicly available under its applicable open-data license, including the ODbL. It is governed by that database's terms and privacy policy. Do not include names, phone numbers, email addresses, physical addresses, or other personal data in free-text contribution fields. Label photos are not uploaded, but avoid photographing personal information.

Analytics, crash reporting, advertising, and tracking

The current version of VeganLens includes none of the following:

Data retention

Local data remains until you clear it in the app, delete history or the cache, or uninstall VeganLens. Contributions sent to a public database may be retained under that database's rules and cannot be managed from VeganLens.

Security

Local data is protected by Android's application storage isolation and is not transmitted to the developer. The app does not store credentials. No storage or transmission method can guarantee absolute security; keep Android up to date and install the app from trusted sources.

Children

VeganLens is not specifically directed at children and does not knowingly collect children's personal data. Because no account is required, the app does not request identifying information to use its features.

Rights and how to exercise them

You can control local data by clearing history and the cache from the app profile, removing favorites, or uninstalling VeganLens. To request management of a public contribution, contact the database that received it under that database's terms and privacy policy. We have no backend or user account that could identify or administer your local data.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy when VeganLens features or its services change. The revised version will be published on this page and the date above will be updated.
